 | | | | | I pity the fool who doesn't follow my tennis T.I.P.: Track the ball.. 'watching the ball' like a spectator and 'tracking the ball' are two different things. How high is the arc of the ball? Is the ball spinning with topspin, backspin, or sidespin? Will the ball land short or deep? Intercept the ball... It's all about moving from point A to point B. Where do you need to set up to hit the ball? Go to that spot before the ball gets there. Anticipate the most likely spot you need to be. Anticipate by observing the face of the opponent's racket. Where is the face pointing? That's where the ball will go. Get going immediately. Don't be a spectator. Place the ball... You have choices where to aim your shot. Down-the-line, crosscourt, or down-the-middle. If you are not sure then go for power down the middle. If the opponent has to hit from the center of the baseline he will have less angle to hit a winner. | Here is a tip that a tennis instructor who coaches the Spanish Davis Cup players told me. The Spanish players are known for their heavy topspin shots on the red clay courts. He tells his players to "roll the thumb" on the forehand topspin shot. Try this: hold your racket with the forehand grip. Drop the racket head towards the ground. Check the position of your thumb. Is it pointing down towards the ground? Good! Now slowly bring the racket up as if your hitting a forehand. At the same time roll the thumb from the 'pointed-down position' to the 'pointed-up position'. This will roll the thumb forward and over the ball to create topspin. Make sure you hold the grip firmly as you bring the racket forward and upward through the ball. Also be sure to snap the wrist by making a fist. Think of a boxer like the great Mr. T making an uppercut punch. This will generate tremendous racket head speed and torque resulting in massive topspin and excellent control. Don't worry about follow-through too much as you begin to master this technique. Too much focus on follow-through will confuse what you are trying to do with the thumb. Focus on snapping the ball with the forearm and wrist to generate power. Snapping the wrist through contact will generate tremendous racket head speed. You can always add a follow-through later on if needed. Focus on the thumb. Roll the thumb over the ball as you snap the wrist. Your racket should end up pointing in the opposite direction of the ball when you add a follow-through. You can follow-through over your opposite shoulder or around your waist. For maximum topspin you can follow-through over the same shoulder as your racket arm. Slowly pull the racket up the length of your body as you contact the ball and end up pointing the racket over your shoulder at the fence behind you. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |
