Donny & Jiri Zubek at West Wind Park Tennis Center | Boot Camp Tennis This tennis tip was inspired by an article written by Charles Bricker that was published in the Sun-Sentinel newspaper. It was entitled "Operation: Save U.S. Tennis....America needs a few good champions. Welcome to boot camp." The article goes on to describe how a half dozen U.S. junior tennis players were voluntarily sent to boot camp to learn discipline. They had to endure a drill seargeant shouting right in their face. Both soldiers and elite athletes, the article goes on to say, have to learn how to fight back when the chips are down and impose their will on the opponent. In my opinion, the battle is decided before the first ball is hit. I know from my own experience that I can choose to make it a struggle or not. It's all up to me. The muscles only fire for a split second or two. If I choose to serve quickly and effortlessly then I feel there is less risk of injury. I feel it is better to relax immediately after I serve. This is my choice and I feel less stress when I can relax. Of course, proper technique is important. It is more efficient. It is imperative to have good balance. Also proper use of the shoulder turn and hip rotation. It's important to keep your hand and wrist straight before, during and after contact. It is important to be smooth and not rush around without a plan. To be more productive on the court, one axiom would be to 'slow down'. It is important to focus on the task at hand. To summarize, I can choose with my mind. I can choose to struggle. Or I can choose to not struggle. I feel that I play my best tennis when I'm in "the zone". That is, it feels to as if I am observing myself playing from a location about four feet above my body. My mind is just observing. No critical voice telling me what to do or not to do. I'm just observing. Then I feel I can play my best tennis. |
